Newgale to Solva

You know it’s a little disconcerting out here in the ‘Wild West’ waiting at an unmarked stop for both the main and shuttle buses. It’s a leap of faith the very first time you wait, nearly always alone ,because I like ‘early’ and usually catch the first one of the day. Today I’m catching a ‘main-line’ bus from the top of Solva back to the 3 tiny stores at the end of Newgale. I’m bracing myself as I know from meeting my brother and sister in law out here that the climb onto the path is really quite steep. Its a murky day as I look from the top of the climb onto Newgale below.

Its quiet and I’m enjoying the solitude on a grey and slightly misty morning. There isn’t anything unusual, except what looks like a recent landslide and no other walkers to talk to.

Past the earthworks I can see what I think maybe Solva through the distant fog because as yet the sun hasn’t done anything to shift it ! The terrain is even with no real climbs until the final approach

Having eaten about a mile out of Solva , I am surprised by the approach. Its not the usual round the corner, but a descent into a pebbled beach followed by a hard climb onto a ridge overlooking the village.

Beach - Pre-Climb to Solva Ridge

Walking off this beach onto the ridge that overlooks Solva is steep, however the view from the top is worth it. Solva nestled inbetween two steep valley sides is a ‘sight to behold’ The walk down I found hard on the knees and can be approached in two directions. One is onto the shore by the lime-kilns and the other slighly longer path enters the harbour area close to the cafe, pub, and picnic area.
