Machynlleth to Cwrt

We are on the last of 5 days of walking in North Wales today. I wish to get the steepest part over with so we start at Machnlleth. Herein begins our first ‘test’ of the day. Parking the ‘start’ car is problematic as there is no parking at the Railway Station unless of course you are taking a train. The town centre car park is only 4 Hrs Max and we will be walking for a lot longer than that !

Taking advice from a friendly lady with child attached , we end up on the far side of town which is a lot further away from where I wanted to start close to the river.

However there is some good fortune as we locate the coast path start point for a walk to ‘Borth’ which is planned by Miss ‘M’ in June. The first picture of the day is Machynlleth’s clock only because we’re coming back through town to start.

On the ‘river’ side of town we take the ‘old’ road and cross the ‘old’ bridge before turning left and walking gently upward till we locate our path. As we do so a picture of the river is required. Its another dry day so far , yippeee.

We start climbing. Without being a bore all I need to say was that for me the climb went on ‘forever’. Miss ‘M’ is unfazed as we level out at the the top. Here we are immediately entering a narrow path into woodland which soon becomes steep and slippery !

Soon to be steep and slippery

At the bottom of the slippery slope we land onto a forestry commission graveled road. To our surprise we meet a ‘local’ going the other way. Little did we know as we descended to CWRT later on that we would bump into ‘others’ mostly walking their dogs.

The forest track taking us toward Pennal

Soon the track is descending and there are one or two ‘remote’ farmsteads to our right, nestling in the hillsides.

Some way further on a clearing presents itself with what appears to be a ‘brand new’ picnic table, which we avail ourselves of. There are also the parked cars which I assume belong to the ‘dog walkers’

Half a ‘yummee’ pastie later we head off, still on the track, which keeps descending until we level out at Pennal. We’re almost finished I thought !

At Pennal I took my only picture of the day as the history caught my attention regarding , the war of the roses and the constitution of said road. See what I mean.

Road of the GRAVES

Leaving Pennal we have crossed the main road and are climbing upward, quite steeply through a residential complex. At the top a magnificent house presides and out-dates the surrounding accommodation.

This looks like the front BUT its actually the side – Front is LEFT

Here Miss ‘M’ is bewildered and I am aware that our GPS is pointing us elsewhere when we reach the top of the slope behind the grand house. The signage for the coast path is appallingly bad. I should have taken a photo to show this !

Having orientated ourselves and after some discussion we find the path and continue clockwise around the nearby hillside and start our descent to Cwrt.

The last walk of our week in Wales completed and we already have plans for the Llyn peninsular in June 2024
